It Doesn't Define Me

Mike grew up in Trotwood, Ohio graduating from Trotwood Madison High School. He went on to attend Wright State University. Now, he is a 36-year-old, loving boyfriend and father of 3. He has 2 boys and 1 daughter. He has been an employee of Select Industries for 11 years. He has worn many hats there as a press operator, job setter, and currently as a quality tech/auditor.

While at work, on February 24, 2018, a 7,500 lb. steel coil fell on top of Mike. He spent 4 months in the hospital recovering from his injuries. He had over 20 surgeries before deciding to have his leg amputated in April of 2018.

He had these words of advice for amputees, “Understand that losing a limb is a life-changing experience, and you cannot be afraid or ashamed to grieve. Know that with time, hard work, and support you can bounce back and manage a normal life. Don’t let it control you!”

Reflecting on his experience thus far as an amputee, he said his biggest lesson has been, “Learning that this amputation doesn’t define me and that I am still the same person. That has been the biggest hurdle and accomplishment I’ve achieved thus far. This has allowed me to be myself again, play with my kids, participate, and enjoy recreational activities again. I’ve bowled and played corn hole. Amazingly, I have even gotten back on my motorcycle. In 2022, I returned to work, accepting a new position as Quality CMM Programmer.”
