Keep Active!

Even at 83 years old patient, Shirley is full of life and inspiration! Her positive attitude shines through when she says, “Keep moving to find other things to do like helping others. You are not by yourself!” Shirley has been a below-knee amputee since September 2019. Originally from Pittsburgh, PA, She and her husband moved to Columbus, OH in 1968 due to her husband being stationed at Lockbourne Air Base. Shirley has 4 children, 7 grandchildren, and 5 great-grandchildren.

Shirley never finds herself without something to do. She likes to knit, crochet, and volunteer at her church. She also volunteers at The Laurels of Worthington (A Skilled Nursing Facility) 2 days a week. Each day she spends 5-6 hours motivating and encouraging the residents. She also worked at JCPenney’s until she was 79 years old. She takes pride in how well she can get around amputation. One thing that undoubtedly has helped in her recovery is her attitude that focuses on others rather than focusing on herself. She says she is grateful to be able to spend so much of her time helping others. “They need to have encouragement!”
